My daughter is off school sick right now - and has been for nearly a week. There are many levels of 'too ill to go to school'. We've been through the 'too sick to get out of bed' via the 'not able to get off the sofa - except to change channels' and we're now on the 'so bored I'm going to pretend I'm at school anyway'.
So I'm having to come up with things to amuse an impatient five-year-old. I thought I'd done well when I dragged out a flower press from the back of the cupboard and suggested she picked some blooms from the garden.
Once I'd pointed out that an entire allium head wasn't the most practical choice, she did quite well, cutting Lady's mantle, Heuchera leaves and flower stalks and some purple geraniums. She even managed to set up the flower press with very little help (although in retrospect, doing this outside with a relatively strong wind was not one of my better ideas).
The problem came when she wanted to use some of her pressed flowers to make pictures and bookmarks and I had to explain that we needed to wait a couple of weeks. "Two weeks?!" was her incredulous reaction.
Thinking about it, I realise I should have taken a leaf from the Blue Peter handbook and magically found some blooms 'that I had pressed earlier'.
I have since learnt that you can speed up the process by using - wait for it - a microwaveable flower press. Is it just me, or is this one of the most useless inventions since the cucumber cap first appeared on Dragons Den?
Hi! Did you make or purchase your flower press? The emblem painted on the front is magical!

Unfortunately I can't claim the press for myself - it was a charity shop purchase a few years ago. Very 70s and I love it!
